The Magic of Beeswax

Interesting fact! Jennifer Lawrence is the youngest actress to be nominated for two Best Actress Academy Awards.

Today I want to share with you another miracle-working homemade beauty recipes. And the main component is... beeswax! Don't be surprised. In fact beeswax is widely used in cosmetics and natural skincare. Besides it's absolutely natural and has plenty of advantages.

In ancient times beeswax used to play a part of currency. People used it as currency standard when exchanging goods and called wax plates “bars of gold”. Beeswax as a medicine was first mentioned in the Egyptian “Ebers Papyrus” (circa 1700 BC). Ancient Egyptians used propolis for mummy embalming.

Nowadays we don’t use beeswax for that purposes. In fact it is widely used in production of nourishing, softening, and protective creams for face and body. Sun creams, lipsticks and balms also contain it.

Beeswax has wonderful softening, nourisging, and anti-inflammatory properties. Beeswax-based cosmetics not only improves skin condition, it also quickens the processs of healing of different injuries (irritation, inflammation, burns, wounds, etc.).

Skin absorbs beeswax quite slowly forming some kind of protective film without blocking pores. This film slows the process of dehydration and therefore skin aging making it gentle, smooth, and elastic. It is very popular in homemade cosmetics, especially in making of creams for dry and aging skin.

Take a note that it’s not recommended to melt beeswax in metallic, iron, or copper dishes because of the interaction between fatty acids in beeswax and certain kinds of metal which creates harmful salts. Stainless steel, aluminium, enameled, or wooden dishes are better for making handmade cosmetics. It melts at 63-65°С. Its keeping time is quite long even at room temperature.

These are few of my favourite beeswax beauty recipes.

Beeswax Anti-aging Mask

Melt 1 teaspoon of beeswax on water bath and add 1 teaspoon of honey; 1 teaspoon of rosehip oil; 1 teaspoon of wheat germ oil and 2 teaspoons of onion juice. Stir this mixture slowly on the water bath for a few minutes. Then whisk it with mixer. Apply still warm cream to your face for 30 minutes. Remove the surplus with a paper napkin. If you have oily skin, use lemon juice instead of oil juice.

Beeswax Mask for Dry and Chapped Skin
Melt 1 teaspoon of beeswax on water bath and add 1 teaspoon of soft butter and 1 teaspoon of carrot juice (you can use cucumber instead of carrot juice). Leave this mixture on the water bath until butter melts completely, and then blend it with mixer. Apply still warm cream to your face for 20-25 minutes. This mask is also good for chapped hands.

Nourishing and Emollient Beeswax Cream for Dry Skin
For this recipe you will also need such component as borax which in this case works as emulsifier.
Dissolve a little amount of borax (on the tip of a knife) in 1 tablespoon of hot water. Melt 1 teaspoon of beeswax on water bath and 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil (olive or linseed oil; wheat germ oil; rosehip oil; peach or grape oil) and dissolved in water borax. Mix it all together, take off from the water bath and whisk it with blender until it cools down.

Refreshing and Nourishing Beeswax Mask for Aging Skin

In this recipe you will also need lanolin.
Mix 1 partially filled tablespoon of sour cream with 1 tablespoon of carrot juice; 1 tablespoon of potato juice and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. You can also use only sour cream and lemon juice.

Melt 1 teaspoon of beeswax on the water bath and add 1 teaspoon of lanolin and 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil (you can use any other vegetable oil which suits dry and aging skin). Stir this mixture carefully on the water bath for a minute. Take it off from the water bath and mix it thoroughly with the first composition (sour cream and juice). Apply this mixture to your face and leave it there for 20-25 minutes then wash it away with warm water and rinse your face with cool water afterwards.

Take a note that all the components should be heated, so when they come in contact with wax it won’t harden.
